Roses is a multi-generational family saga that is very well written. I'm not sure if I've ever encountered a book with more frustrating characters - particularly the women who were either obsessed with the Somerset plantation or else manipulative and vindictive. Pretty much everyone needed their heads knocked and their priorities realigned! There is a whole lot of sadness and regret, without much joy in any of the characters lives, and even the ending wasn't as joyful and satisfying as I was hoping. So this book earns 4 stars for being very well written, it draws the reader into the family story and makes you care for the characters. However I can't say I actually enjoyed reading it since it was so tragic and sad.

Roses Leila Meacham 9780446550000 Books Reviews

Ordered this to have a hardback reading copy to replace a damaged paperback and was thrilled to receive an almost perfect book with an almost perfect dust jacket. Great book, rather like a mashup of GWTW and Downton Abbey. So nice to find a dealer that knows what they are doing !
Have read this book twice now. This time I read it right after reading the prequel, 'Somerset' and I loved the continuing story. I'm a Texas history nut and love that these two novels follow the true history of Texas. They ARE novels and the people are fictional, but they give a wonderful understanding of the settlement and early history of Texas.
After reading Somerset, which I LOVED, I couldn't wait to read Roses. I was not disappointed. Because I read it immediately after Somerset, the characters were still very fresh in my mind which made Roses even more delightful to read because they talked a lot about the previous characters. I felt a great sense of nostalgia reading this. Both books played out vividly in my mind. Will be looking for more books by Leila Meacham.
I read this book for Book Club while on vacation with some girlfriends. We all loved the book. Even though it is not Gone with the Wind or Thornbirds, it does have that family saga with several generations and relationships that are not ideal. So, I guess you could compare it to those books. The main characters were flawed, but loved. I plan to read the prequel as well. Very enjoyable, and even though it was a little longer than many books (600+ pages), it went fast, did not seem long at all.
I have tried to read this story twice and have not felt compelled to finish either time. Judging from the many good reviews I can hardly trust my own judgement. I am actually from East Texas and always want to read any story that is set here. While the story-line was interesting enough I found the plot to be a bit lackluster. Maybe it's just me and I prefer a little more grit in my fiction. Sort of like grits at breakfast adds a special element to a good southern meal.
I am glad to be finished with this book. I didn't appreciate the disregard for the heart throughout the story. To me the characters were manipulative and self serving and far too cold to be enjoyed. Having grown up in a loving family, I can't imagine allowing things be more important than love. I gave it three stars because the writing flowed and was well done, I just didn't care for the characters personally. I also felt the climactic buildup at the end was hardly satisfying considering the amount of time spent waiting to 'understand' all of the why's...
I ADORED "Roses" and put it in my top 10 favorite books of all time and I've read a lot of them. A generational book that will make you think about your own legacy and what kind of mark you will leave on the earth to those that follow behind you. Having traveled to the South this summer and visited some cotton plantations I found it easy to picture the lifestyle and imagine the period "Roses" takes place in. Be ready for a history lesson in the very best possible way. This is so much more than a romance novel and you won't be disappointed. I'm definitely a Leila Meacham fan forevermore!
