First, this is NOT part of the Zion Coventant Series but the Zion Diaries series -- if there is, indeed, a series as this is the only book shown on Amazon. The book is correctly classified in the paperback format -- although the product page for that asks readers if they'd like to read this in Kindle edition as though Amazon is not aware that it sells the Kindle edition.I'd have given the book five stars, but the Kindle edition is poorly formatted. It appears to have been scanned without review. In some places, words run together. In others, words are divided by huge blocks of white space. Numbers, probably page numbers, appear in the middle of a block of white space within the text. There is no copyright date inside the Kindle edition, yet Amazon gives it a date of 1900 -- not possible.
Furthermore, the cover lists it as Book 1 of 2 . . . but where is Book 2?
However, the story is well worth reading. It connects the nine books of the Zion Covenant series with the five books of the Zion Chronicle series as it follows two sisters fleeing Belgium as the Nazis invade, finally making their way to Dunkirk and miraculously escaping to England and Wales for the duration of the war. This is a different, much more mystical, tale than the other two series offer. Readers will likely respond to that on the basis of their own beliefs. The prologue implies that this is non-fiction, but it is classified as fiction.

The Gathering Storm Zion Diaries Bodie and Brock Thoene 9781609360337 Books Reviews
I couldn't put this book down again. I read it before, but read it again just as if it were brand new. I am so awed that writers took such a tragedy in history and personalized it to the extent that it involved my spirit and my emotions.
The Thoene family just keep writing better and better, if that is possible. I want to write just as they do, but unfortunately, they are writing about something which already took place, and I want to write about the future. They took a young person they named Loralei and placed her in a difficult time in history. Her personal tragedies make a setting for the Germans killing people in country after country during WWII in Europe. We can so identify with what she went through and know her story is multiplied by millions of families who lost so much too. I marveled how their character kept going on to help so many others during her life.
I gave this book five stars because of how well-crafted the story is on every front. I was surprised by the unusual ending, but I wanted that ending and allowed for the fantasy.
... one begins to wonder what is going on. Something in it is not ringing true, but the reader is so accustomed to the excellence of Bodie Thoene's writing, her superb plots, perfect timing, etc., that one just keeps plodding on, certain all will soon be made well.
It never is. It goes from unsettling to bizarre and finally ends at preposterous and downright irritating. I rarely throw books away. If I think them less than what they should be, they go to Goodwill. I threw this one away.
I love the excellently researched, well developed books of the Theones, so I read this one with eagerness. At first, it did not disappoint. Then, about two thirds of the way in, the mystery turned out to be mystical, an immortal living from the time of Christ. While I don't mind a good Christian fantasy fiction, it doesn't mix well with rock solid realism of the historical fiction the Thoenes write. It was a real letdown. (Formatting in the kindle version needs a lot of work, too.)
The only proof that I have that this was written by Bodie and Brock is that their name is stamped in the front cover other wise it is completely different from their other works of historical fiction. In the previous series they always had characters that had substance and purpose but Loralie Kepler is lacking in both. At the beginning of the book I was interested but the more I read the less satisfied I was and to top that off poor Varrick I mean I cant imagine how awful it would be to be him. In the past whenever the Thoenes introduced a new character it felt natural but Loralie and her families addition to Elisa's family felt forced, unnatural, and unnecessary. Now this brings me to greatest issue which is the story of Eben Golah. He is simply a man who happens to be immortal so he isn't an angel or any sort of super natural being. That's okay I can buy that for the sake of the story but then his whole romance with Loralie just felt a little wrong all the same. And the way the talk about it (i.e. Loralie couldn't forget the ecstasy she had experienced the night before) or something similar to that. The point being if I wanted to read cheesy romance I would buy cheesy romance. This is the first Thoene book that I have read that I would not recommend I hope that this book doesn't signify a change in Thoenes writing abilities.
